Two staff liaisons from the ASU Study Abroad Office (SAO) will be available to meet with The College students in Armstrong Hall. Our office hours will be held in ARM 102x, and we look forward to sharing information, opportunities and resources to help The College students prepare for participation in an ASU study abroad program. The following staff are available:
Shira Burns — Shira is the Assistant Director for Partnership, Exchange and Curriculum Integration. In this role, she works closely with staff, faculty and students to develop and implement study abroad programs that meet the academic, professional and personal goals of ASU students. She provides leadership to the Partnership and Exchange unit and coordinates programming and advising for ASU’s Partnership and Exchange programs in Denmark and Sweden. A proud Sun Devil, Shira earned a Master’s degree in Higher and Postsecondary Education from ASU and a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from York College of Pennsylvania.
As an undergraduate, she studied abroad for a semester in London, England, where she first developed a passion for international education. She has since traveled throughout England, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Mexico and the Caribbean, and enjoys helping students find ways to make study abroad a reality. Shira looks forward to meeting with The College students and advisors to share study abroad opportunities and resources, and continue collaboration and development of The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences major guides for study abroad.
Mandy Nydegger – Mandy is the Assistant Director for Faculty-Directed Programs & Curriculum Integration, working with faculty and staff across the university to design and implement faculty-directed programs that occur both during the full semester and during short periods such as Spring and Winter breaks. She also focuses on curriculum integration efforts for the office, helping to build and strengthen connections between study abroad and academic units. Mandy holds a PhD in English from Baylor University and a Bachelor of Arts from Milligan College in English and Humanities.
Prior to joining ASU, Mandy coordinated a domestic study away program at Duke University and taught literature and composition courses at Baylor, Milligan and Northeast State Community College. Teaching provided her with the incredible opportunity to get involved with study abroad programs. She taught Baylor students during a semester-long program in the Netherlands, and she led Milligan students on a month-long program throughout Europe. Through these opportunities, Mandy saw firsthand what a formative experience studying abroad is for students.
She hopes that through her partnership with faculty and staff, she can help make studying abroad a reality for as many ASU students as possible! She looks forward to collaborating with The College advisors to continue creating study abroad major guides for The College majors, and she is excited to meet with The College students to discuss their study abroad opportunities.
