Summer 2018, Fall 2018, and Academic Year 2018-2019 Programs:

All students studying abroad on an ASU study abroad program are expected to complete an online pre-departure orientation, details of which are listed in your online application. In addition to this required online orientation, we are happy to host an optional in-person pre-departure orientation conference: #SunDevilsAbroad: The Journey Begins.  The conference will be held on:

  • Sunday, March 18th at 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM

Registration will be available within confirmed students' online study abroad applications.

*All faculty-directed programs will also have a program-specific pre-departure orientation that is organized by the faculty-director. Be in touch with your faculty-director for details and dates.

Reflections for Your Future Self: Mindfulness, Meaning and Memories

Study abroad will likely be one of the most incredible and rewarding experiences of your college career. Intentionally reflecting on the before, during and after will deepen those experiences and keep them fresh for your future self. We’ll discuss how to take time for mindful reflection while you’re abroad in order to help you process and make meaning of your experiences. 

Study Abroad Parent Workshop: What You Need to Know 

Designed for parents of students studying abroad, this session guides you through preparing your student. Learn how to support your student through all stages of the experience: what to do before they leave, their financial responsibilities, the resources ASU offers students abroad, what to expect while your student is abroad and more. 

Work It: How Studying Abroad Can Jump-Start Your Career 

Congrats on setting yourself apart from the crowd by studying abroad! Learn how study abroad gives you transferable skills that are in high demand from graduate/professional schools and employers. Not sure of the best ways to maximize your experience for career development? Come learn how!

Returned Students’ Perspectives

Using a small group roundtable format, hear firsthand from returned students on how to make the most of your experience. Get tips and tricks about the academic expectations, culture, travel, logistics and much more. There will be opportunities for both structured questions and free discussion, so come with your own questions. Countries/regions represented by returned students will be announced right before the breakout session.

Surviving & Benefitting from Cultural Transition

How do you thrive in a culture other than your own? In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn practical cultural preparation to live and learn successfully in diverse cultures. You’ll leave the session understanding cultural stress and shock, the fact that NO ONE is immune to culture stress, how to recognize symptoms of cultural stress/shock and how to respond.

Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees: Travel Budgets

Want to maximize your travel opportunities while on your program but concerned with your budget? Come learn about tips and tricks to stretch your dollars by traveling on a budget, finding student discounts, booking hostels, using money saving apps and keeping track of exchange rates.

Travel Like a Pro

Never traveled internationally on your own before? Learn how to navigate the logistics of travel, staying in touch with home, making the most of your free time and maximizing your budget. Gain valuable tips and tricks to travel with confidence.
